Daniel Pearl was an inspira­tion around the world. He was a writer for the wall street journal and shared his passion for mu­sic wherever he traveled. A vio­lin enthusiast; Pearl would join and play with local ensembles during his travels and celebrate culture through music.

However, Pearl’s life was tragically cut short after be­ing kidnaped and executed by by a group of Al-Qaeda extrem­ists while working on a story in Pakistan. In memory of Daniel Pearl, the East Grand Rapids orchestra holds an annual ben­efit concert called Harmony for Humanity for World Music.

The orchestra will be playing a medley of tradition­al Jewish songs to recognize Pearl’s heritage as well as vari­ous pieces from around the world to embody his love for culture.

The proceeds from the concert will go to a music school in Africa for children. The amount of funds that are raised will determine how many un­derprivileged African children will experience passion through music.
