There is NO Greater Joy In Giving...
There is NO Greater Joy In Giving...

Last night, I had the wonderful opportunity to help out at Kids Food Basket in Grand Rapids. I help out with many community walks and events, but I can honestly say, there is no greater joy than when I donate my time to help make brown bags for children to take home for dinner. There are over 30,000 children in Kent County living in poverty. To think that many of these children go home at night and are not fortunate enough to have one of these brown bags pains my heart.

As a helper last night my job was to put 6 cherry tomatoes in a zip lock bag for the children. Do you know how hard it was not to put 7 or 8?? 6 cherry tomatoes looked so empty in the snack bag. I overheard someone say that some children share a meal with another sibling who was not able to get a bag that day. That is only 3 tiny cherry tomatoes per child. My heart was aching to think of any child that has to live without the basics that I am so very fortunate to have.

I would challenge any of you to take the time to volunteer at the Kids Food Basket as an individual, group, or by taking your family. I saw many families helping out last night. It was so wonderful to see the smiles on the children's face that were volunteering their time.

About Kids Food Basket

Kids’ Food Basket is a force for "Attacking Childhood Hunger in greater Grand Rapids."  They began over eight years ago by serving 125 kids each school day through their sack supper program and now serve over 3,700 kids each day. Sack suppers are evening meals that provide 1000 calories and five food groups—nutrition that’s critical to the development of kids’ brains and bodies.

With these evening meals, we attack childhood hunger by:

•Serving kids directly. Sack suppers are distributed within classrooms or at local parks, meaning every child who needs one can get one easily and safely.
•Creating an engine for volunteering. Our work is driven by the love and support of our community, with over 150 volunteers packing and delivering sack suppers every day. Many more lead juice box and snack drives and fund drives.
•Empowering kids to help each other. Through volunteering and educational programs, we help kids understand hunger and lead projects to end it. Over 25% of hours volunteered come from youth under age 18.

Please contact the Kids Food Basket to set up a time to bring your family or group. An hour or more of your time means dinner for so many local children. I will be there on 5/24 with the Friends & Families of Cystic Fibrosis. I hope to see you there!!
