City prepares for Lakeside Drive reconstruction

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Winter is here, but the City of East Grand Rapids is already looking ahead to a new season of construction.

The Lakeside Drive reconstruction project is expected to begin in May 2014.  The project includes rebuilding the road from Wealthy Street to Greenwood Avenue, adding curves.  Right now, the plan also includes eliminating nine parking spaces near Greenwood, but city engineers are hoping to install additional parking spaces across from John Collins Park.  Crews will also install new sidewalks and replace an underground water main.

A city employee says the reconstruction project is meant to bring the road up to new standards. A federal grant will pay for about 70 percent of the project; the remainder of the cost is covered under the city budget.

City engineers are currently designing what the finished roadway will look like.  Bidding on the project is expected to begin in February 2014. Drivers can expect detours until the work is finished, likely by August 2014.
