Aquinas College Honors Notable Alumni

On Thursday, September 25, Aquinas College honored notable alumni as a part of its 13th annual Awards Gala. Brad Smith (’91), president and CEO of Intuit, a software company based in California, received the Outstanding Alumnus Award. Jacqueline D. Taylor (’80), Ph.D., a higher education administrator for more than 30 years, received the Outstanding Alumna Award.

“Both Brad Smith and Jacqueline Taylor are outstanding examples of Aquinas alumni,” said President Juan Olivarez. “In their fields they have set great examples for innovation and long term thinking. We’re proud to honor them both and to count them among our graduates.”

Smith earned his master of management degree from Aquinas College in 1991. Prior to joining Intuit, he served as the senior vice president of marketing and business development at ADP in Grand Rapids. In 2003, he joined Intuit as the vice president and general manager of the Accountant Central and Developer Network.

As part of the Aquinas College Homecoming, walkers & runners are invited to take part in this 2014 AQ Run Thru to benefit Mary Free Bed Wheelchair & Adaptive Sports.

This 6th Annual fun run course is a scenic route through Aquinas College, highlighting many new additions to the campus & the natural trails.

Aquinas College is located at 1607 Robinson Road SE in GR. Registration takes place at Lower St. Joe’s Parking Lot on Saturday, September 27 from 8:00-8:45am and the run starts at 9:00am.

2014 MidWest Ferret Fellowship Faire on September 20

The Midwest Ferret Fellowship invites the public the chance to see the judging of a variety of Ferrets at their best. 

This Faire takes place on Saturday, September 20 at 9:30am at a new venue, Whiskers University located at 2855 29th Street, Suite D in Grand Rapids, Michigan 49512.

This Faire is sanctioned by the American Ferret Association and proceeds will benefit the West Michigan Ferret Connection.

Admission is $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for children 7-15 yrs. Free for children under 7 with paid adult.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – To honor all those who sacrificed their lives during the terrorist events of September 11, 2001, the Gerald R. Ford Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation and Museum hosted the 13th annual Day of Remembrance and Scout Salute from sunrise to sunset on September 11, 2014. Poet Gregory Orr To Speak at Aquinas' Contemporary Writers Series

On September 17, the Aquinas College Contemporary Writers Series presents poet and award-winning writer Gregory Orr. A master of short, lyric free verse, Orr is the author of eleven collections of poetry. His most recent volumes include: The River Inside the River, How Beautiful the Beloved, and Concerning the Book that is the Body of the Beloved. His memoir, The Blessing, was chosen by Publisher’s Weekly as one of the fifty best non-fiction books of 2002.

My Town EGR: Driving detours expected Sept. 6 as triathlon returns

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Drivers may want to avoid the East Grand Rapids area Saturday, as the Rhodes-McKee Lake Triathlon returns to the area.

Road closures will take effect 4 a.m. Saturday for event set-up.  The first wave of athletes will hit the water at 7:10 a.m., with the bicycling and running events taking place soon after.  

Volunteers will be posted at intersections to guide drivers through the detours. The roads should reopen around 10 a.m.
