GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- The 2014-2015 school year is officially underway for West Michigan students.

On Sept. 2, which was the official start of classes for most schools, State Superintendent Mike Flanagan released this statement: 

"It’s a great day to be Back to School in Michigan !

Let me take a moment to wish everyone a positive and successful school year.

Our team here at the Michigan Department of Education, the State Board of Education, and I appreciate the hard work and daily dedication teachers, administrators, school board members, and other school staff devote to our children in Michigan.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Crash’s Landing & Big Sid’s Sanctuary invite the community to help rescued cats Wednesday, Aug. 27 by picking up a pizza.

Print a flyer from Crash's Landing's website and present it to employees at any of the 14 participating Pizza Hut locations Wednesday to donate 20 percent of your total bill to Crash’s Landing & Big Sid’s Sanctuary.  The benefit runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Aug. 27 and includes dine-in, carry out or delivery orders.

The flyer has the list and addresses of the 14 participating Pizza Hut locations in the Grand Rapids area.

My Town EGR: Aquinas College announces lineup for Contemporary Writers Series

 

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Best-selling author and spoken word poet Sarah Kay is one of four speakers who will be presenting during the 17th season of Aquinas College’s Contemporary Writers Series program.

This year the lineup also features poet Gregory Orr, essayist John D’Agata, and Michigan resident and novelist Peter Ho Davis.

“We are delighted to welcome these dynamic and renowned writers to Aquinas College for the Contemporary Writers Series,” said Dr. Shelli Rottschafer, director of the Contemporary Writers Series. “Each year we strive to find respected writers who will appeal to multiple audiences and create thought-provoking conversations. This year we truly have diverse and engaging writers, and we are excited to share the lineup with the community.”

My Town EGR: Delta Subaru Gaslight Criterium leads to driving detours Aug. 17

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Drivers can expect some detours in and around Gaslight Village this weekend, as the Delta Subaru Gaslight Criterium returns Sunday, Aug. 17.

Several streets will be closed from 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. during the circuit bicycle race.  For a map of the closures, click here.   Spectators are welcome to shop and dine in Gaslight Village during that time, as most businesses will be open as usual, however access to parking will be limited. 

The criterium is 0.8 miles that is relatively level with four left turns and one sweeping curve.  Each finisher will be placed based on time and division, which includes juniors, women and men. There is also a kid’s race at 11:30 a.m.

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Bicycles will take over East Grand Rapids this weekend as the Delta Subaru Gaslight Criterium returns Sunday, Aug. 17.

The circuit bicycle race will run from 8:15 a.m. through 5 p.m. in downtown East Grand Rapids. The course is .8 miles that is relatively level with four left turns and one sweeping curve.  Each finisher will be placed based on time and division, which includes juniors, women and men. There is also a kid’s race at 11:30 a.m.

My Town: Taste of East Grand Rapids returns

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--  Get a “Taste of East Grand Rapids” when the festival for foodies returns for its fifth year next month.

The family-friendly event will take over the streets of Gaslight Village Thursday, Aug. 21 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitors may sample food from nine area restaurants, including Olive’s, Big Bob’s, Ramona’s Table, Derby Station, Jersey Junction, Olga’s Kitchen, Mary Ann’s Chocolates, Foo Yen and Osta’s.  This year’s event also includes live music and a free Kid’s Fun Zone featuring inflatables, face painting, air brush tattoos, a magician, crafts and more.  Mangy Gaslight Village shops will also be featuring sidewalks sales.

Taste of East Grand Rapids is presented by the Gaslight Village Business Association.  Proceeds from the event will go to Susan G. Komen of West Michigan.

My Town: Restaurant Week GR to include specials from 66 restaurants

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Restaurant Week is about a month away, but you can start making your plans by salivating over the menus.

The 5th annual event runs from Aug. 13 to Aug. 24 at 66 Grand Rapids restaurants. This year, the theme is "Perfect Pairings" to showcase beverages that pair well with foods.

Restaurants are now taking reservations for Restaurant Week Grand Rapids. This year, 44 restaurants will offer 3-course locally inspired menus for $28 per person, including:
