-----NEWS RELEASE----KENT COUNTY, Mich. –Kent District Library is kicking off its second annual Genre Derby, an online crowdfunding effort aimed at reducing wait times for print and digital books by growing the library system’s collection of its most popular items. And every horse in this race wins; all money collected for a specific genre will be spent on materials in that genre only.

REgistration is required to attend an informative orientation to learn about Bethany Christian Services Foster Care Program.

Refugee youth, who have been separated from their families by community violence, war and abuse are desperate to live in a an accepting and loving foster home that helps welcome them to our country and prepares them for future independence.

This orientation takes place Monday, Feb. 2 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Michigan Refugee Services located at 1050 36th Street, Suite 400 in GRand Rapids.

Dinner will be provided. There is no required commitment to this free orientation.

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, MI –With the 12th state title in 15 years, a team of 31 juniors and seniors from East Grand Rapids High School earned the right to compete at the national level after winning the top spot in state competition January 9th.  The team is led by coach Janice Yates, assistant coach Alex Constantelos, and student coaches from the previous year's team.

During the three-day national competition April 25-27, students from the 50 states will be put to the test during mock Congressional hearings, during which panels of state supreme court judges, constitutional scholars, lawyers, public officials and We the People alumni challenge them to apply constitutional principles and historical facts to contemporary situations.

My Town EGR: 'The Man Who Came to Dinner' student performances Jan. 16-17

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- The student-directed play, "The Man Who Came to Dinner"  will take over East Grand Rapids High School's Little Auditorium this Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

In this Broadway favorite and classic 1930s comedy, audiences will be taken back in time to the Stanley home. After finishing a meal at the home, Sheridan Whiteside, a famous radio talent, slips on their doorstep just prior to Christmas, breaking his hip.  A tumultuous month of confinement follows as the invalid invades the Stanley family's home with hilarious results.

This is the 11th annual student-produced play for East Grand Rapids High School. Students direct, design, act and work as crew members.  

Admission is $5 at the door.  Tickets are also available in the high school lobby 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Jan 12. through Jan 16.

Christmas is over, which means it’s time to trash the tree.

Many municipalities are offering free tree recycling services to residents with a natural tree.  Some communities are planning to put the trees through a chipper and use the remnants to cover park trails and other green spaces.  Here is the schedule for live tree drop-offs:

Ada Township (Through Jan. 12)

  • Ada Township Park, from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

 

Alpine Township (Through Jan. 31)

  • Behind Township Hall, 5255 Alpine Ave. NW

 

Cannon Township (Through Jan. 10)

  • West side of the township building; RHS Honor Society will help unload trees Jan. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (donations encouraged)

 

Courtland Township (Through Jan. 31)

  • Fire Station #1 on 14 Mile Road

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Linda Hundt, author of "Sweetie-licious Pies: Eat Pie, Love Life" and owner the nationally recognized award-winning Sweetie-licious Bakery Café, tells the story of her journey from start-up to star at the Loutit District Library on Thursday, Jan. 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Linda’s program will feature tips about business, mission and customer service, including :
