My Town EGR: Public Safety Director reminds riders to remember the helmet ordinance

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—As temperatures climb, East Grand Rapids’ Public Safety Director wants to remind bicyclists about the city’s helmet ordinance.

The ordinance requires anyone under the age of 18, who is riding a bicycle on a public roadway, sidewalk or public bicycle path to wear a protective helmet.  People who violate the ordinance will receive three warnings before they could get a $50 ticket.  The fine also applies to anyone who rents, leases or loans a bicycle to a person under the age of 18 who does not wear a protective helmet while riding.

Parents are encouraged to make sure children are wearing helmets not only to avoid punishment, but to protect them from injury.
