My Town EGR: City reminds residents of snow clearing rules

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (City of East Grand Rapids)-- The City is prepped and ready to handle the snow removal needs of the community for the upcoming winter season.

The priority routes are considered our major streets. These routes are plowed and salted as necessary to minimize slippery road surface conditions. Local road routes include all remaining residential streets. These routes will be plowed after all priority routes have been cleaned. Local road routes are lightly salted, as needed, to control slippery conditions.

In the event of significant snow accumulation on one-way and other narrow streets, the city posts temporary ‘no parking’ signs in advance of efforts to remove excess snow. Residents are asked to make every effort to remove vehicles from streets where these signs appear so personnel can plow, haul snow and keep the streets passable and accessible.

City sidewalks are plowed after a snow accumulation of approximately two inches and on weekends when the snow fall has concluded. The sidewalk School Priority Routes are cleaned as needed to ensure sidewalks are clear prior to the start of school. The City does not provide ice control to city sidewalks. Residents are encouraged to do so if necessary along their frontage.  Sidewalks will be cleared but most likely will not be down to the bare sidewalk.  There may be a minor depth of snow or ice remaining once the plows have gone down your sidewalks.

With your cooperation following heavy snowfalls the clearing of streets can be accomplished better with the removal of cars from within the roadways.

Residents are also reminded not to shovel, plow or blow snow into the street or sidewalks when clearing their driveways.  Everyone’s cooperation is appreciated.
