Two teen golfers selected for The First Tee – Champions Tour Challenge in Florida

----NEWS RELEASE---

Two local teens are getting away from the winter cold and bringing their golf clubs to compete in The Golf to Paradise – First Tee Champions Challenge in Naples, Florida. 

Elias Aouad, a senior at East Grand Rapids High School and Andrew DeYoung, a junior at Kenowa Hills High School are being sent by the local non-profit The First Tee of West Michigan. The First Tee teaches students values and life skills through the game of golf and has had Aouad and DeYoung as participants since 2011.  

In conjunction with the ACE Group Classic, a Champions Tour event, six affiliates of The First Tee from across the country have been invited to participate.  The Challenge will be hosted at The TwinEagles Club in Naples, Florida on February 9 and 10.

Ice Hockey Happenings

The EGR Varsity Hockey team has a road game Friday, December 6 at Farmington Hills.  The next day, the Pioneers take on Kentwood in Holland in the OK Conference annual Tier One Challenge.   The team is now 3-0-1, the tie coming Saturday, November 30 against Catholic Central.  The team heads to Gaylord next weekend to take on Flint-Powers and Gaylord.  The next home game at Patterson is Friday, Dec. 20 against Rockford.

The fourth installment of USA TODAY High School Sports' "Best Of" contest series kicks off at noon (ET) Monday, Sept. 30, with the first-ever Best High School Football Coach contest. USA TODAY staffers have selected eight active head football coaches in each state after more than a month of conversations with local media and other state/school officials with high school football expertise. From there, the fans will decide which coach emerges from a list of 408.

   The boys of fall are back.  Practice began this week for the East Grand Rapids High School varsity and junior varsity football teams.   Two-a-day practices are underway at Memorial Field under the direction of Head Coach Peter Stuursma.  East opens it's 2013 season at home with a game on Thursday, August 29 versus Catholic Central.

EGR Little League players move on to regionals

A Southern Little League team comprised of many players and coaches from East Grand Rapids has won the state title and is moving on to regional play in Illinois.

Southern's Seniors Baseball All-Stars defeated Saginaw Sunday 11-5 to win the state tournament.

The manager is Chris Lamange; the coaches are Rob Henkey and Mike Horjus.

Local Athlete Earns Academic Honors At Aquinas

Coopersville High School Class of 2009 basketball player Brett Pfahler was recently honored by the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) as a member of the Men’s Basketball All-Academic team. Pfahler is a redshirt junior at Aquinas College.  He was a three-sport athlete in high school and was All Conference in Football, Basketball and Track while at Coopersville.

Area School Hosts Traditional Celebration for First Time

 

Grand River Preparatory High School will celebrate its first ever Homecoming celebration with a week full of events starting Feb. 11, 2013.

The weeklong celebration, themed "A Night on the Red Carpet", includes a powder puff football game, a boys’ volleyball game, a staff vs. students basketball game, college apparel day, costume day, pajama day, and twin day. Friday will conclude the week of celebration with the homecoming assembly and first ever court, the varsity basketball game, and the crowning of the King and Queen at half-time.

“We are very excited to be celebrating our very first homecoming with our students,” said Grand River Preparatory High School Principal Jason Bannister. “Not only will they be showing their pride for their school, but will be helping to give back to their community.”
