My Town EGR: City to invest in new weather alert system

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The City of East Grand Rapids is upgrading its weather sirens.

During its regular meeting Monday, the city commission unanimously approved purchasing a two-way weather system that would also detect any malfunctions.  As part of the new system, the city would have a repair service available around the clock to respond to any problems.

East Grand Rapids officials began discussing upgrading the alert system after the current one failed to activate during the first siren test of the year, in April.  Neighboring communities have already employed the two-way weather system.

The City of Grand Rapids has agreed to monitor and activate the siren when necessary at no cost to East Grand Rapids.  The system’s $7,620  price tag was already planned for in the city budget.
