Lakeside Construction now set to finish October 18

EAST GRAND RAPIDS - The city says weather delays and other complications have extended the time to complete reconstruction of Lakeside Drive, a project that's been underway since May. Detours have been underway for months, along with periods of construction inactivity. Completion is now set for October 18.

In a news release, the city says several days of rain, extremely high water tables, unstable soil conditions and unlabeled underground wiring have contributed to additional time and expense to correct.

The first phase of the project, replacing the waterline underneath Lakeside along Reeds Lake, was finished in May. It was a city contract. The second phase, resurfacing the street, and replacing the sidewalks, is a state project. The city says the State of Michigan was responsible for bidding and awarding this contract. There was a long lag in time in June and July when no work was performed on Lakeside. The city says the two separate contracts is the reason for the gap.

Plans now are for the state-hired contractor to pour the curbs and place the first course of asphalt during the week of October 6. If weather cooperates, completion is set for October 18.
