KENT COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM)- Officials with the Kent County Animal Shelter are defending their work after a new report on shelter kill rates.

According to the Michigan Pet Fund Alliance, the Kent County Animal Shelter recently had the third highest kill rate in the state - euthanizing more than 4,700 animals.  The report claims the shelter saves just under 18 percent of the animals it houses.

A shelter spokeswoman claims the shelter's save rate is closer to 37 percent.
