My Town: Restaurant Week GR to include specials from 66 restaurants

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Restaurant Week is about a month away, but you can start making your plans by salivating over the menus.

The 5th annual event runs from Aug. 13 to Aug. 24 at 66 Grand Rapids restaurants. This year, the theme is "Perfect Pairings" to showcase beverages that pair well with foods.

Restaurants are now taking reservations for Restaurant Week Grand Rapids. This year, 44 restaurants will offer 3-course locally inspired menus for $28 per person, including:

Caught Being Safe program launches statewide

Michigan State Police, local law enforcement and Michigan’s Field Neurosciences Institute have teamed up with McDonald’s of Michigan to once again launch “Caught Being Safe,” a statewide bicycle/scooter helmet safety program. Kids wearing helmets and “caught being safe” by participating law enforcement officials will treated to a free ice cream cone or Apple Dippers at McDonald’s. 

According to the Field Neurosciences Institute (of Michigan): “Caught Being Safe! has shown a significant increase in both helmet utilization and public awareness regarding the critical importance of wearing a bicycle helmet. This program has impacted not only children but adults as well.”

My Town: Grand Rapids area brewers begin Thank You Tour May 6

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A group of Grand Rapids area breweries is thanking patrons for putting the city on the craft beer map by winning it the title of Beer City USA.

Grand Rapids won the title outright last year, with more than 27,000 of the 50,000 votes cast I the now defunct online poll.  The vote was organized by Charlie Papazian, founder of the American Homebrewers Association, the Great American Beer Festival and a beer writer for Examiner.com.

To celebrate the final Beer City win, the founders of MIBeers and Momma Needs A Beer are teaming up with area breweries for a Thank You Tour that starts Tuesday, May 6.  Brewers, local celebrities and BeerCity team members will visit each of the businesses on the tour to hand out freebies to patrons.

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—If you’re looking for a clean, safe place to dine out this weekend, the Kent County Health Department has some suggestions- 471 of them, actually.

The KCHD recently announced the winners of its 2nd annual Food Safety Awards.  This year’s 471 winners were selected from more than 1700 licensed facilities that were inspected through 2013.    To qualify, each establishment had to meet the following criteria:

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—A new sweet shop is coming to downtown Kalamazoo.

The Cupcake Zoo is opening a store in downtown Kalamazoo.  The Otsego based business bakes up cupcakes, cake pops, cinnamon rolls and other treats.  Cupcake Zoo also offers gluten-free, allergen-free and vegan options.  Regular cupcake flavors include Thin Mint Shake, 24 Carrot, Peanut Butter Cup, Lemon Sunshine and Birthday Cake, but there are always special treats being whipped up and displayed on the business’ Facebook page.

Lindsey Pompileo with The Cupcake Zoo says employees are exhausted, but excited about opening the new business.  She says the new store’s target opening date is April 1, but it’s not set in stone.  The new store will be located at 117 E. South Street, which used to house Loved Consignment Boutique.

'Beervangelist' to present to a packed public library

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—“Beervangelist” Fred Bueltmann can expect a packed house when he presents Books & Brews at the East Grand Rapids Public Library.

Bueltmann, co-owner of New Holland brewing Co., will discuss his book, “Beervangelist’s Guide to the Galaxy” during the event Thursday, Feb. 13. Pre-registered patrons who are age 21 or older can also sip a few of his favorites.

The Kent District Library says the event is at capacity, but patrons can add their name to the waiting list.

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—The Kent District Library is putting the “pub” in public library starting next month.

With the growing popularity of the craft beer industry in West Michigan, KDL decided to begin offering free home brewing classes, brewery tours, brewery book discussions and beer tastings in January and February 2014.
