Out of a field of over 70 exemplary restaurants participating in Restaurant Week Grand Rapids this year there are 3 having female Executive Chefs. Talking to these insightful women on their career paths, we wondered if being in a mostly male dominated field has had any impact. What we learned is that these ambitious women have had an amazing and colorful culinary history. They share formal culinary training, yet they also learned the emotion of cooking from their extended family members (mothers, grandmothers, fathers, mothers-in-law and fathers-in-law) who taught them about food passed down from generation to generation.

Hanging Out In… East Grand Rapids

Hanging Out In… East Grand Rapids

Written by Steven G. de Polo

East Grand Rapids is a bedroom community of split-levels and pre-fab colonial homes with access to good schools. Having been raised in Grosse Pointe, I can say that EGR is populated with overly competitive, sports-obsessed middle-class people who wear a lot of North Face clothing. It's Rockford with trees. However, it does have sweet shopping and restaurants.

Experience Grand Rapids has revealed the participating restaurants in this year's Restaurant Week Grand Rapids, and there are even participating restaurants in East Grand Rapids.

70 restaurants have signed on to the event, which will run from November 3 through November 13th.  In the East Grand Rapids area, Olive's and Rose's with both participate in the celebration.

Most establishments will offer a creative 3-course menu for $25 per person (not including tax or tip).  Some restaurants will offer a 2-for-$25 menu to appeal to more budget conscious diners.

The menus will be unveiled the week of October 10th.
