City prepares for Lakeside Drive reconstruction

City prepares for Lakeside Drive reconstruction

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Winter is here, but the City of East Grand Rapids is already looking ahead to a new season of construction.

The Lakeside Drive reconstruction project is expected to begin in May 2014.  The project includes rebuilding the road from Wealthy Street to Greenwood Avenue, adding curves.  Right now, the plan also includes eliminating nine parking spaces near Greenwood, but city engineers are hoping to install additional parking spaces across from John Collins Park.  Crews will also install new sidewalks and replace an underground water main.

A city employee says the reconstruction project is meant to bring the road up to new standards. A federal grant will pay for about 70 percent of the project; the remainder of the cost is covered under the city budget.

East Grand Rapids to join group setting ambulance standards

East Grand Rapids to join group setting ambulance standards

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The standards for ambulances running in East Grand Rapids may soon change.

During its regular meeting Monday night, the city commission approved joining an ambulance consortium with other Kent County communities.  The consortium would establish across-the-board ambulance service standards for all communities involved, through contracts. East Grand Rapids currently works with AMR Ambulance, but the city does not have a contract with the company.

City Manager Brian Donovan says communities that are part of the consortium will create an oversight group which will make sure all ambulance companies are abiding by contractual standards. By consolidating regulation, each community will save staff time and money.

Community Foundation and City eye grants to improve pedestrian bridge

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Fundraising efforts are underway to improve the pedestrian bridge over the channel between Reeds and Fisk lakes.

The East Grand Rapids Community Foundation is partnering with the City for the project, which would replace the current two-lane roadway and narrow wooden bridge with a three-lane roadway and elevated boardwalk.  The third lane of the road would be separated from vehicle lanes, allowing visitors to pass with less risk.

The Community Foundation and City are applying for state and local grant funding in addition to raising private funds.  They hope to begin the project within the next few years.
